French club Marseille announced today, Friday, the departure of Argentine Jorge Sampaoli as coach of the team, less than a year and a half after his appointment to the position.
Sampaoli, 62, replaced Andre Villa-Boas in the team’s training in March 2021, and led the team to finish second behind Paris Saint-Germain in the French League, in the only full season in which he led the team.
Weeks after the team qualified for the Champions League, Sampaoli is leaving the post amid reports of growing frustration with the club’s limited activity in the transfer market and lack of ambition.
“We would like to sincerely thank Jorge Sampaoli for his work,” Marseille said in a statement.
He added, “We are satisfied with the progress that has been made and the moments that we went through together, but after a long thought, the two parties agreed to end this stage.”
Pablo Longoria will start looking for a new coach for the team to replace Sampaoli, who led the team to 36 wins in 67 games, and his contract was supposed to last for another season.
