The UAE Ministry of Health has announced the emergency use approval of a protein-based vaccine from the Chinese company Sinopharm, which will be available as a booster dose from January 2022.
The ministry said in a statement on state media on Monday that the vaccine will be produced and distributed by a joint venture between the UAE Group 42 and the China National Biotech Group (CNBG), a unit of the Chinese National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharma).
The ministry added that the approval came in the wake of a study in the UAE, which included individuals who were previously vaccinated with two doses of the inactivated Sinopharma vaccine.
On Monday, the UAE reported 1,732 new cases of coronavirus and one death. The authorities, who did not provide details for each emirate, said about 91 percent of the population of about 10 million had been fully vaccinated.
