The European Football Association and its South American counterpart confirmed on Wednesday that the European champions Italy will face Argentina, the Copa America champions, on June 1, 2022 in London.
The match, dubbed ‘Finalisima’, was approved last September shortly after UEFA and CONMEBOL strongly rejected FIFA’s plans to hold the World Cup every two years.
European Union President Aleksander Ceferin said in an official statement: “There is a long-term cooperation between the European Union and South America, which can be found over the years in competitions such as the Artemio Franchi Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.”
He continued, “It is with great pride that we relaunch such a prestigious trophy for national teams that will delight football fans around the world.”
The two teams beat the hosts in the Continental Cup final, as Italy beat England at Wembley last July, while Argentina ended 28 years of title absence after beating Brazil at the Maracana.
The two unions also signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will run until June 30, 2028.
