The United Nations Integrated Mission in Support of the Transitional Phase in Sudan (UNITAMS) said today, Monday, that the Representative of the Secretary-General in Sudan, Volker Peretz, met with Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.
The mission quoted Peretz on Twitter, stressing his support and the support of the United Nations to restore Sudan’s path on the path of democratic transition.
Sudan’s attorney general investigates protests’ violations
On Monday, Sudanese Attorney General Khalifa Ahmed issued a decision to form a committee to investigate the events and violations that occurred in processions and demonstrations since October 25, which led to the death and injury of a number of citizens.
The Public Prosecutor’s decision specified the committee’s tasks to investigate the facts and circumstances of the events, determine the losses in private and public funds and properties, arrest the accused, record criminal reports against them, and bring them to court.

In addition, the Vice-President of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), discussed with Tut Gallwak, the advisor to the President of South Sudan for security affairs, on Monday, the importance of reaching “complete consensus among all components to reach a specific vision” on how to manage eastern Sudan.
The Sudan News Agency quoted Gallwak, head of the southern mediation delegation, as saying that the eastern Sudan agreement stressed “the necessity of establishing a comprehensive conference that includes all the people of the East to discuss their issues.”
He added that the east is “the gateway to Sudan and its neighboring countries, which calls for work to stabilize it.” He stressed that South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit “is following with great interest the implementation of the peace agreement signed in Juba… to bring the views of all components closer to reach an agreement that guarantees peace, stability and development for the people of eastern Sudan.”
After a meeting with the head of the Sovereign Council, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, the agency quoted Qelwak as confirming that the mediation “will work hard to solve all the problems that obstruct the implementation of the agreement, whether in eastern Sudan or the north and center, and the security arrangements in Darfur and the two regions.”
Demonstrations in Khartoum
The Sudanese police fired tear gas canisters on Monday, to disperse hundreds of Sudanese protesters in Khartoum near the presidential palace, who demanded civilian rule, according to an AFP correspondent.
Hundreds of Sudanese are demonstrating in the center of the capital and its neighborhoods to denounce the political agreement signed by army chief Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok last month, after al-Burhan ousted civilians from the transitional rule of the country in October.
AFP correspondents reported that the protesters carried Sudanese flags and chanted, “The people are stronger, apostasy is impossible.”
Others carried banners reading “No to negotiation” and chanted “Civility is the people’s choice.”
Eyewitnesses reported that hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets in the states of Gedaref and Kassala, in the east of the country.
Statement from the US Embassy
Today, Monday, some Sudanese unions and political activists called for demonstrations towards the Republican Palace. This comes in conjunction with a statement by the US Embassy in Khartoum affirming its support for the Sudanese people.
The Sudanese Professionals Association, earlier in a statement, called on citizens to gather today, Monday, and head towards the Republican Palace.
And he said in a statement yesterday, Sunday: “We call on all revolutionaries and revolutionaries to actively participate in the processions of tomorrow, to stand firm in the face of oppression and to chant slogans expressing the unity of the national ranks behind the issue of overthrowing this brutal authority.”
For its part, the embassy said in a statement on Facebook: “We stand with the Sudanese people in their quest for freedom, peace, and justice in today’s demonstrations, and we welcome their government’s commitment to protecting peaceful demonstrators.”
