Napoli scored a thrilling 3-2 home win over Leicester City on Thursday to advance to the Europa League knockout stages after finishing second in Group C behind Spartak Moscow.
Spartak defeated Legia Warsaw 1-0 to qualify directly for the round of 16, while Napoli will face one of the third-placed teams in the Champions League groups, which were relegated to the second competition in the continent after the winter break.
The third-placed Leicester will move to the Conference League in the third level of the tournaments, as it plays a play-off in order to qualify for the round of 16.
Adam Ounass put Napoli ahead in the fourth minute and the Italian team looked in control when Elif Elmas added the second goal.
The slack defense caused the hosts to receive two consecutive goals before the break through Jonny Evans and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who scored his first goal for Leicester to equalize. But North Macedonia playmaker Elmas restored Napoli’s lead early in the second half when he converted a cross pass into goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in the absence of defense.
Spartak, who beat Napoli in head-to-head matches, qualified after goalkeeper Alexander Slikhov saved a penalty in stoppage time, while striker Zelimkhan Bakayev scored the winning goal in the 17th minute in Legia.
Real Sociedad also booked its place in the knockout rounds by finishing second in Group Two thanks to a 3-0 victory over its guest PSV Eindhoven, to outperform the Spanish team in the standings over the 1988 European Cup champion.
Mikel Oyarzabal gave Sociedad the lead with a penalty kick in the 43rd minute and added the second goal, before Alexander Sorloth completed the hat-trick in the last minutes.
