Diplomatic sources reported that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres placed himself in quarantine for a few days on Tuesday, after he had contact with an official of the international organization, who later turned out to be infected with Covid-19.
The sources told AFP that Guterres, 72, had canceled all his attendance obligations.
On Wednesday evening, the Secretary-General was supposed to be the guest of honor of the United Nations Press Association at its annual gala in Manhattan.
And on Thursday, Guterres was scheduled to participate in a meeting of the UN Security Council chaired by Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, which will focus on the challenges of terrorism and climate change.
Bazom, whose country assumed the monthly presidency of the Security Council in early December, arrived in New York on Tuesday and will stay there until the end of the week before heading to Washington.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric declined to comment immediately on this information.
A few days ago, Dujarric announced that Guterres had recently received his third vaccine dose against the Corona virus, after he hesitated for a long time about the advisability of taking such a step at a time when millions of people around the world are still deprived of receiving the first vaccine dose.
