A Kenyan policeman shot and killed five people in a rampage in the capital, Nairobi, on Tuesday, then killed himself, the police criminal investigation department said.
The Department of Investigation said on its Twitter account that the officer, whom it described as a “rogue”, started killing his wife in their home and then came out carrying his official Kalashnikov AK-47 and killed four other people before shooting himself.
She added that three of the dead men were mourners who had just emerged from a burial ceremony.
“After killing the three men, the officer turned his gun to two on two motorbikes, one of whom died while receiving treatment,” the police said.
Francis Wahom of Nairobi’s Dagoreti Police District confirmed the incident earlier and said six people were killed. A police report also indicated that six people were killed.
Later, a Reuters witness said angry residents in the area set tires on the road to protest the violence.
In a similar incident in 2010, a policeman in the town of Saikago, 120 km northeast of Nairobi, killed 10 people, including two of his colleagues.
A police spokesman said at the time that he tried to kill himself but that he ran out of ammunition so he had to turn himself in.
